Enhancing Sports Medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine
ACUSPORT EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
ISSUE 43 | JANUARY 2022
We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and very happy new year! We are super excited for the new school year coming our way!
As we mentioned, due to such increased demand, we added an additional section of this class on February 17-20, 2022 in San Diego, CA at the Marina Village Conference
Center.
And, as a reminder for all of our California practitioners, despite a substantial increase in fees by the California Acupuncture Board, we have decided to absorb this increase and continue to provide CAB Continuing Education units for all of our SMAC Program in-person classes!
A couple more things not to miss:
SMAC PROGRAM REMINDER:
For anyone unable to attend our SMAC PROGRAM live, in-person or live, webinar classes, about 75% of the SMAC PROGRAM can now be taken online! So, If you haven’t taken the Anatomy, Palpation and Cadaver Lab and/or Assessment & Treatment of Channel Sinew classes, we are also offering these classes as recorded webinars for those travelling to NJ or CA for the live ATI class. These classes are great precursors to these practical, in person only classes (ATI). Also, as the weather gets colder and harsher for many of us, this is a great time to stay in and do some online study!
These recordings are available for purchase through Lhasa OMS, Eastern Currents and other strategic partners overseas as well! These classes allow you to earn distant CE’s and count toward your certification! Module !: The Spine, Module
III: The Lower Extremity and Module IV: The Neck, Shoulder and Upper Extremity are now available. Module II: The Low Back, Hip and Groin should be available later this month so keep a lookout on our website! For students taking online webinars and wanting to
earn their C.SMA, please make sure to submit a copy of your CEU certificate from these live webinars and recorded classes to acupsortinfo@gmail.com so they will count toward your certification.

“Every practitioner of acupuncture at every level will gain further insight and knowledge from this book.” — Peter Deadman
A brief statement from a user of the book:
“Your book really helped me take that next step - I have used other books and protocols but your organization and explanations are superior - the integration of different ages and scenarios and then the points to match. . . great work and skill, thank you . . and my patients thank you too, many successful outcomes with your guidance- I have been in practice 16 years with loyal following and have been using your book to help several unresolved problems that
my “tool” bag could not help! Thanks again!” — Ali Racheotes
NOTE: The book is available in Canada, Europe, Australia and the UK. To purchase it from one of these locations, please do so through the appropriate distributor found in the FAQ section of the webpage.

2. NEW & UPDATED Motor Points & Acupuncture Meridians Wall Chart is HERE!
|
"Special shout out to Sports Medicine Acupuncture for this brilliant and extremely durable Motor Points and Acupuncture Meridians poster! Patient education is a big deal at my practice. I also appreciate a good 'cheat sheet.' Very informative and well done!” Dr. Samantha Hodges, DAOM, L.Ac., CMT at Personal Best Acupuncture in Marin.
"This chart is amazing! My clients love looking at it and chatting about where they’re feeling pain." Tiffany Schaal from Breathe Easy Wellness.

3. C.SMA PRACTITIONER OF THE MONTH:
Diana Herrera, DOM, L.Ac., C.SMA
Diana tells us about her successful palliative care treatments of a patient waiting for surgery with a full thickness tear of the supraspinatus.
4. FEATURED ARTICLE
The Psoas Major, the Lumbar Plexus, and the Dai Mai
by Brian Lau, L.Ac., C.SMA
Brian tells us about his thoughts during a recent cadaver dissection! Says Brian: "Although my job is to facilitate the learning of the students, each year there are key areas where I want to review and deepen my understanding—and, this year, those were the lumbar plexus, the nerves coming from this plexus, and their relationship to the psoas major."
5. SMAC PROGRAM CLASSES
To make registration easy for both online course and live in-person courses, we’ve created two registration pages—one for Live, In-Person Classes (every class will still be offered in this format) and another for all Recorded Webinars (about 75% of the program is
available in this format).
You’ll still have a two-year period of time to complete all of your classes to earn your certification, but this will allow you the flexibility to attend classes either in person or study on your own time. View our Class Descriptions page for a list of classes for each module and the available formats!
For those looking for certification, you will need to take all classes in every module, including the four practical, in-person only classes and then pass all four online module exams and the final in-person, practical exam.
- Module I Huatuojiaji Points: Vertebral Fixations and Facilitated Segments
- Module II: Assessment and Treatment of Low Back, Hip & Groin Injuries
- Module III: Assessment and Treatment of Lower Extremity Injuries
- Module IV: Assessment and Treatment of Neck, Shoulder & Upper Extremity Injuries
Please keep in mind, you can start the program with any Module and can take individual classes or all classes within a Module!
For questions and support, please visit our newly revised FAQ page. From registration to certification questions,
this is an excellent resource to get all your questions answered. As always, if you have any additional questions, please email Patricia Botet at acusportinfo@gmail.com. We’re always here to help!

7. ACUSPORT EDUCATION'S STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
We want to make sure you know about the beneficial alliances that AcuSport Education has formed with Lhasa OMS and Unified Practice. This is just one of the ways we are fulfilling our goal to support our program graduates!
8. WANT TO STAY CONNECTED WITH US DURING THE MONTH?
Make sure to join our Sports Acupuncture Facebook Group where we post interesting treatment strategies and the sports acupuncture community shares clinically relevant discussions that can help
you improve your practice. We began moderating this new group on July 1, 2019. It is closed to the public, but open to ALL Licensed Acupuncturists and Acupuncture students (proof required) and ALL members of the group can post. The page is NOT exclusive to C.SMAs, so others training in Sports Acupuncture are welcome to post, though we think that the group will reflect Sports Medicine Acupuncture, especially if C.SMAs post frequently. Below is a portion of the statement
that appears on the 'About' page.
"This group is open to licensed and registered acupuncturists. The goal of this sports acupuncture group is to build unity in the field of Sports and Orthopedic acupuncture and to promote this field within the larger acupuncture community. While the administrators of the group are the creators of Sports Medicine Acupuncture®, sports and orthopedic are welcome to post and discuss. The group is lightly moderated. Information from
all traditions of acupuncture are welcome and encouraged, as they are collectively integrated into this forum, but please keep the conversation relevant to the above stated goals."
The current SMA Google Group (for C.SMA practitioners) and SMA Facebook page remain the same.
