Enhancing Sports Medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine
ACUSPORT EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
ISSUE 46 | APRIL 2022
Spring is officially here and we are gearing up for an amazing summer ahead of live, in person classes!
Later this month—from April 21-24—we will be hosting our last class in Bloomfield, New Jersey, Module IV: The Neck, Shoulder and Upper Extremity class. Keep in mind, we opened a second section of this class June 23-26, 2022, in San Diego. We only have a couple spots left so if you are interested, please register ASAP!
Open Registration Coming Soon!
1. June 4—Live Webinar—The Quadratus Lumborum: Structure, Function & Treatment
Matt Callison and Brian Lau will discuss the quadratus lumborum being a crucial structure of the lumbar spine. Its role in stability and contribution to low back pain are controversial. We will discuss this muscle's complex structure, latest research on its function, and treatment protocols.
2. 3-Day Cadaver Lab for the Acupuncturist: The Low Back, Hip and Lower Extremities
Each participant will be involved in a 3-day whole body cadaver dissection (fresh tissue—never embalmed). There will be four cadaver dissections occurring simultaneously with five participant dissectors per cadaver. Each participant in the group will have the opportunity to dissect, palpate and needle important structures under the guidance of the Brian Lau and Matt
Callison. The opening of each day will begin with a short presentation on the channel systems myofascial structures, motor points, target tissue, nerve pathways, needle depths and goals of the day’s dissection. Each practitioner dissects a region of the body to its completion in a way that will result in a learning opportunity for every member of the group.
THE NEW 2022-2023 SMAC PROGRAM
A few changes:
→ We will now have four Sinew Channel Assessment and Myofascial Technique (SAM) classes (previously called the Assessment & Treatment of Channel Sinews (ATS). Due to popular demand, there will be one SAM class per Module! ***SAM I is currently being offered in person only, but we hope to offer as a live, webinar in the next year.
→ To streamline the curriculum for the Postural Assessment & Corrective Exercise (PACE) classes, we will now start them in Module II instead of Module I.
→ The Anatomy, Palpation and Cadaver lab will allow for TWICE as much time with the cadaver, palpation and motor point location and needle technique!!! Matt and Brian will not be lecturing in the morning session, but will be going directly into the practical lessons that are divided into morning and afternoon sessions. The registrant will be required to watch the online recording of the
didactic lectures prior to attending the live class (included in the cost of the class).
→ The Assessment & Treatment of Injuries (ATI) classes for Modules II-IV will now be 5 days to allow for more practical time, especially since some students are opting to take some of the preliminary classes online; the Module I live-only class Huatuojiaji: Vertebral Fixations and Facilitated Segments will continue as a 2-day course.
→ We will also be offering a second section of our practical classes: Huatuojiaji: Vertebral Fixations and Facilitated Segments in Module I and the Assessment & Treatment of Injuries in Modules II-IV in Dallas, Texas, to accommodate the overflow of ATI
→ The entire Program will be offered in person at the Marina Village Conference Center in San Diego, CA. Students who have taken online recordings and wish to repeat
any of these classes in person will receive a 25% discount!!! *
* For current students—If you have already started taking live classes prior to this program, you will only be responsible for the courses as previously laid out.
SMAC PROGRAM ONLINE LEARNING AND RECORDED CLASSES
As a reminder, for any of you who were unable to attend our SMAC PROGRAM live, in-person or live webinar classes, about 75% of the program can now be taken online! So, If you haven’t taken the Anatomy, Palpation and Cadaver Lab and/or Assessment & Treatment of Channel Sinew classes (now called SAM), we are also offering these classes as recorded webinars for those traveling for the live ATI class. These classes are great precursors to these practical live, in-person only classes (ATI).
***Keep in mind, Sinew Channel Assessment and Myofascial Technique (SAM) 1 is currently the only in this series that is being offered in person only for now, but we anticipate hosting a live webinar for this class in the year to come!
These recordings are now available for purchase through Lhasa OMS, Eastern Currents and other strategic partners
overseas as well! These classes allow you to earn distant CE’s and count toward your certification! For students taking online webinars and wanting to earn their C.SMA, please make sure to submit a copy of your CEU certificate from these live webinars and recorded classes to acupsortinfo@gmail.com so they will count toward your certification.

7. ACUSPORT EDUCATION'S STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
We want to make sure you know about the beneficial alliances that AcuSport Education has formed with Lhasa OMS and Unified Practice. This is just one of the ways we are fulfilling our goal to support our program graduates!
8. WANT TO STAY CONNECTED WITH US DURING THE MONTH?
Make sure to join our Sports Acupuncture Facebook Group where we post interesting treatment strategies and the sports
acupuncture community shares clinically relevant discussions that can help you improve your practice. We began moderating this new group on July 1, 2019. It is closed to the public, but open to ALL Licensed Acupuncturists and Acupuncture students (proof required) and ALL members of the group can post. The page is NOT exclusive to C.SMAs, so others training in Sports Acupuncture are welcome to post, though we think that the group will reflect Sports Medicine Acupuncture, especially if
C.SMAs post frequently. Below is a portion of the statement that appears on the 'About' page.
"This group is open to licensed and registered acupuncturists. The goal of this sports acupuncture group is to build unity in the field of Sports and Orthopedic acupuncture and to promote this field within the larger acupuncture community. While the administrators of the group are the creators of Sports Medicine Acupuncture®, sports and orthopedic are welcome to
post and discuss. The group is lightly moderated. Information from all traditions of acupuncture are welcome and encouraged, as they are collectively integrated into this forum, but please keep the conversation relevant to the above stated goals."
The current SMA Google Group (for C.SMA practitioners) and SMA Facebook page remain the same.
