Enhancing Sports Medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine ACUSPORT EDUCATION NEWSLETTER ISSUE 72 | JULY 2024
The summer is flying by, but there is so much in store this July! We hope you have been watching and loving the Olympic qualifying events. With the newly added sports like breaking (yes, break dancing is now an Olympic sport!) and sport climbing, we see athletes pushing themselves and expanding the narrow focus of what we have
traditionally considered to be athletics! Along with this comes more injuries too, and that’s where we at AcuSport Education can help you improve your skills to help the elite athlete, the weekend warrior, the person with an active lifestyle and even the elderly. Sports Medicine Acupuncture (SMA) incorporates principles and techniques from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western Sports Medicine to assess and treat the patient’s injury from a true integrated perspective. That being said, the new and improved 5-Day Assessment & Treatment of Injury Module III: The Lower Extremity starts this month. We’ll be in San Diego, CA July 10-14 and then in Bloomfield, NJ July 31-August 4. Classes are close to maximum capacity so please REGISTER TODAY so you don’t miss out!
Do you know what this condition is and how to treat it when it becomes painful? What you'll learn: - Common sport and work-related injuries will be
discussed from assessment through treatment, examining the mechanical “how and why” injury occurs using postural examinations, orthopedic evaluations and manual muscle testing to assess the musculoskeletal system.
- The practitioner will not only learn how to apply a differential diagnosis to similar pain syndromes but also to learn how to speak to the patient about their injury as well as to clearly discuss cases with other western
medical professionals.
You’ll also learn to accurately differentiate the primary tissue often causing referred pain to the lower extremity and how to accurately apply successful treatment protocols to the affected channels and collaterals (jing luo) for long lasting results. - Innovative treatment protocols will be introduced consisting of
advanced needle techniques to the involved tissue, as well as effective point combinations combining motor and acupuncture points.
Also, make sure to check out our Online Module III Lower Extremity classes, that greatly augment what you learn in this 5-day class!

3. FEATURED ARTICLE: Successful Needle Technique for Patellar Pain Syndromes by Matthew Callison, L.Ac. In this traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture technique, known as Wei Long Ci, 6-8 needles are used to surround the anatomical tissue or area of pain. For the best effect, the needles should be inserted on opposite sides of the affected tissue and directed toward each other. This technique is commonly used for
cysts, masses or patellar conditions such as chondromalacia or patellofemoral pain syndromes.
