Enhancing Sports Medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine
ACUSPORT EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
ISSUE 23 | FEBRUARY 2020
The Year of the Metal Rat is here and it has been an amazing 2020 so far! We kicked off the season with the first two classes in Module II—The Low back, Hip and Groin of the 2019/2020 SMAC Program at the Eastern School of Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine in Bloomfield, NJ and the Anatomy, Palpation and Cadaver Lab—as well as our Assessment and Treatment of Channel Sinews classes. The rest of Module II is sold out, but you can still register and be added to the waitlist since things change all the time! Please email acusportinfo@gmail.com if you have any questions. Module III and IV are also almost sold out so please register as soon as
possible to reserve your seat for the best in sports acupuncture education! As always, you can take individual classes in the SMAC Program at any time!
In just a couple of weeks, the first round of Foundational Classes of our Winter 2020 term will also be starting! Over in Calgary, we’re offering one of our core fundamental
classes—Common Injuries to the Low Back and Hip—where we view the low back and hip complex as one unit and teach how to assess, diagnose and treat imbalance of the musculature acting on the hip and low back. In addition to advanced
needle techniques, we also cover proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitated stretching and myofascial release to help enhance the treatment outcomes. Class space is limited so please register as soon as possible to reserve your seat!
Over in Oakland, CA, at ACCHS, we will be hosting the Nerve Entrapment Syndromes: Neck and Arm Pain (Jingbu Shoubi Tong) class, which is about improving treatment outcomes by
learning how to clearly identify and treat the source of patient’s neck and upper extremity pain through the use of postural assessment, orthopedic examinations and manual muscle testing to identify channel imbalances.

2. C.SMA PRACTITIONER OF THE MONTH:
Tim Eng, L.Ac, C.SMA
Tim Eng describes how his SMAC education has helped him with his biomechanics work at the Nike Sport Research Lab and how he applied what he learned to treat a difficult to diagnose abdominal strain in a ballroom dancer.
3. FEATURED ARTICLE
The Pronator Teres Motor Point and Its Multiple Uses
by Matt Callison, L.Ac.
The Latin term teres, which means “round or cylindrical,” describes a large portion of the pronator teres (PT) muscle’s shape, making it easy to locate. In this month's blog post, Matt discusses the PT motor point and its multiple uses.
4. NEW GLUTEUS MAXIMUS MOTOR POINT
by Matt Callison, L.Ac.
|
AcuSport Education has confirmed and tested a second primary Gluteus maximus (GM) innervation located in close proximity to GB 30 (huantiao). From cadaver dissections, a consistent collateral branch of the inferior gluteal nerve travels from the GM motor point located just under UB 54 (zhibian) to the lateral and posterior muscle fibers entering the gluteus maximus slightly inferior and distal to GB 30. Needle techniques have been developed and practiced and
continue to be clinically refined. We have found collectively that this point is indicated when there is pain with hip joint rotation, especially while in an adducted or abducted position. Also, consider using this point for iliotibial band friction (ITB) syndrome and/or tension in the ITB. Needle technique: Insert a 3-4 inch needle from GB 30 in an inferior and lateral direction to stimulate this motor point. More information coming in the near future. A video of this motor entry point and
needle technique will be available soon.

8. ACUSPORT EDUCATION'S STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
We want to make sure you know about the beneficial alliances that AcuSport Education has formed with Lhasa OMS and Unified Practice. This is just one of the ways we are fulfilling our goal to support our program graduates!
9. WANT TO STAY CONNECTED WITH US DURING THE MONTH?
Make sure to join our Sports Acupuncture Facebook Group where we post interesting treatment strategies and the sports acupuncture community shares clinically relevant discussions that can help you improve your practice. We began
moderating this new group on July 1, 2019. It is closed to the public, but open to ALL Licensed Acupuncturists and Acupuncture students (proof required) and ALL members of the group can post. The page is NOT exclusive to C.SMAs, so others training in Sports Acupuncture are welcome to post, though we think that the group will reflect Sports Medicine Acupuncture, especially if C.SMAs post frequently. Below is a portion of the statement that appears on the 'About'
page.
"This group is open to licensed and registered acupuncturists. The goal of this sports acupuncture group is to build unity in the field of Sports and Orthopedic acupuncture and to promote this field within the larger acupuncture community. While the administrators of the group are the creators of Sports Medicine Acupuncture®, sports and orthopedic are welcome to post and discuss. The group is lightly moderated. Information from
all traditions of acupuncture are welcome and encouraged, as they are collectively integrated into this forum, but please keep the conversation relevant to the above stated goals."
The current SMA Google Group (for C.SMA practitioners) and SMA Facebook page remain the same.
