Enhancing Sports Medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine
ACUSPORT EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
ISSUE 34 | JANUARY 2021
Wintertime is here at last and we are so excited to be starting off 2021 with an impeccable line up of Online Live Webinars. We just finished filming segments for Module IV: Anatomy, Palpation and Cadaver Lab and the Assessment & Treatment of Channel Sinews online live webinars taking place March 4-7, 2021. Check
out the January blog (below) to see “Behind the Scenes” experience working on these recordings the last week of December.
Students attending the Module III sections of these online webinar classes can attest what a great learning experience it was. Plus, you get the added benefit of gaining all this knowledge from the comfort of your own home, while still being able to interact with the teachers and other students.
Our next class coming up on January 30-31, 2021 is the live webinar
Postural Assessment & Corrective Exercise (PACE) III, a ground-breaking course that teaches the practitioner how to
assess postural dysfunction, through static and functional assessment techniques, prescribe therapeutic exercises for postural, muscle and channel imbalances that have directly contributed to the patient’s musculoskeletal injury, and use intra-dermal needle point prescriptions on the Extraordinary Vessel master points to alleviate discomfort, increase proprioception and enhance clinical outcomes. The last in the PACE series, PACE III deepens the not only practitioner’s understanding of the
lumbo-pelvic-hip complex and its relationship to the lower extremity as taught in Module III, but also its connection to the ribcage, neck and shoulder, which will prepare the practitioner for Module IV: The Neck, Shoulder and Upper Extremity.
For more information, make sure to check out the YouTube recording of Matt and Brian’s Sports Podcast with the American Acupuncture Council interviewing Ian Armstrong with the topic: Exercise Prescription for the Acupuncturist.
We're also happy to share that this past December 2020, SMAC faculty member Brian Lau led two back-to-back 5 Day Cadaver Labs for the Physician Assistant program at The University of Tampa (UT)! This is the second cohort for this new PA program at the University of Tampa; Brian helped lead the first cohort last December. In these labs, they use non-chemically treated fresh tissue cadavers and the PA students perform the dissections in teams
of five students per specimen. Brian, along with two UT professors, guide the students in this process. This is an excellent opportunity to pass on skills that have been obtained through the ongoing dissections in Sports Medicine Acupuncture, to introduce acupuncture and Sports Medicine Acupuncture to our Western medical colleagues, and to plant the seed for future collaborations with the University of Tampa.
Our final super exciting announcement is that the live recordings and bonus materials for the SMAC Module III Live Webinar classes The Lower Extremity Anatomy/Palpation/Cadaver (APC) Lab and Assessment and Treatment of the Channel Sinews (ATS) have been released and are uploaded in registrants' Net of Knowledge accounts. For those students who were unable to register
for these classes in October, you will have the opportunity to access these live webinar (CEU approved) recordings later this next month before the PACE III class begins. More to come!!!

3. FEATURED ARTICLE
Behind the Scenes: A Brief Look into Creating SMAC Online Webinars
by Lili Gould and Matt Callison
The year 2020 threw everyone for a loop. In our world of Sports Medicine Acupuncture, that meant an enormous pivot had to occur in order to continue bringing knowledge and information to you, our students, in the form of new anatomical findings, ongoing sinew channel research, innovative needle techniques and assessments and more. This has been an enormous challenge, not only to record and digitize the program’s many facets, but also to do so in the absence of
the part of the program that inspires us the most — our students in the room with us. Operating solely from behind the camera this year has been somewhat soul crushing, and there have been countless moments when we felt like we were pushing a giant boulder up a hill, only to have it roll down the next day. In short, we miss our SMAC family! You are the purpose in our pivot...
4. NEUROSCIENCE ACUPUNCTURE CONFERENCE
The conference will be held from September 19-21, 2021 and will taking place virtually this year! Make sure to check out Matt's presentation on Nerve Entrapment Syndromes: Neck and Arm Pain (Jingbu Shoubi Tong).

7. ACUSPORT EDUCATION'S STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
We want to make sure you know about the beneficial alliances that AcuSport Education has formed with Lhasa OMS and Unified Practice. This is just one of the ways we are fulfilling our goal to support our program graduates!
8. WANT TO STAY CONNECTED WITH US DURING THE MONTH?
Make sure to join our Sports Acupuncture Facebook Group where we post interesting treatment strategies and the sports acupuncture community shares clinically relevant discussions that can help you improve your practice. We began
moderating this new group on July 1, 2019. It is closed to the public, but open to ALL Licensed Acupuncturists and Acupuncture students (proof required) and ALL members of the group can post. The page is NOT exclusive to C.SMAs, so others training in Sports Acupuncture are welcome to post, though we think that the group will reflect Sports Medicine Acupuncture, especially if C.SMAs post frequently. Below is a portion of the statement that appears on the 'About'
page.
"This group is open to licensed and registered acupuncturists. The goal of this sports acupuncture group is to build unity in the field of Sports and Orthopedic acupuncture and to promote this field within the larger acupuncture community. While the administrators of the group are the creators of Sports Medicine Acupuncture®, sports and orthopedic are welcome to post and discuss. The group is lightly moderated. Information from
all traditions of acupuncture are welcome and encouraged, as they are collectively integrated into this forum, but please keep the conversation relevant to the above stated goals."
The current SMA Google Group (for C.SMA practitioners) and SMA Facebook page remain the same.
