Enhancing Sports Medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine

We hope you have all been staying safe and healthy this Fall Season. As Winter approaches, we’re gearing up for our next Online Live Webinar, Postural Assessment & Corrective Exercise (PACE) III January 30-31, 2021.

This groundbreaking course will teach the practitioner how to assess postural dysfunction, through static and functional assessment techniques, prescribe therapeutic exercises for postural, muscle and channel imbalances that have directly contributed to the patient’s musculoskeletal injury, and use intradermal needle point prescriptions on the Extraordinary Vessel master points to alleviate discomfort, increase proprioception and enhance clinical outcomes.

The last in the PACE series, PACE III deepens the practitioner’s understanding of the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex, its relationship to the lower extremity and discusses postural dysfunctions of the foot and ankle complex.

In addition, since the position of the lower extremity and neck and shoulder is predicated on the postural balance of the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex, a review of the assessment of lumbo-pelvic-hip imbalances and its connection to the ribcage, neck and shoulder will be emphasized. This will prepare the practitioner for Module IV: The Neck, Shoulder and Upper Extremity by teaching how to assess the many postural disparities and associated muscle imbalances that can cause injury to these regions of the body. Common imbalances that will be covered in this class are anterior hip shift, posterior tilt of the ribcage, neck and shoulder imbalances such as forward head, forward shoulder and cervical rotation, which can lead to may musculoskeletal injuries.

Exercise Prescription for the Acupuncturist — Elevated Ilium and Medial Knee Pain: A Channel Sinew Perspective

Combining ideas behind exercise prescription with a thorough TCM assessment provides the practitioner with unique insight when developing an exercise program. In this blog, we are taking a common postural disparity “Knee Moves In” that is discussed in the Postural Assessment and Corrective Exercise III (PACE III) class and its association with an elevated ilium. The practitioner will often find patients with medial knee pain will demonstrate this dysfunctional motion and have an imbalance between the Liver and Gallbladder channel sinews (jingjin).

Make sure to join our Sports Acupuncture Facebook Group where we post interesting treatment strategies and the sports acupuncture community shares clinically relevant discussions that can help you improve your practice. We began moderating this new group on July 1, 2019. It is closed to the public, but open to ALL Licensed Acupuncturists and Acupuncture students (proof required) and ALL members of the group can post. The page is NOT exclusive to C.SMAs, so others training in Sports Acupuncture are welcome to post, though we think that the group will reflect Sports Medicine Acupuncture, especially if C.SMAs post frequently. Below is a portion of the statement that appears on the 'About' page.

The goal of this sports acupuncture group is to build unity in the field of Sports and Orthopedic acupuncture and to promote this field within the larger acupuncture community.
