Enhancing Sports Medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine
ACUSPORT EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
ISSUE 41 | AUGUST 2021
We hope you’ve been enjoying a wonderful summertime season! Keep in mind our summer school sessions are a great way to improve your clinic skills while taking a break from the heat. We just completed Module I—The Spine, held the Anatomy, Palpation and Cadaver (APC) lab in June, and Postural Assessment & Corrective Exercise (PACE) I just this last week.
Here are a few of our great reviews:
“An exceptional workshop that enhances the ability to offer patients constructive therapy.” | Yvonne G.
“Very practical content and great delivery.” | Andrea J.
“Material is so useful clinically to take patients to the next level of care and progress.” | Diane W.
“PACE is one of my favorite topics to get in depth with and I always appreciate new ways to approach assessment with clients. This weekend definitely gave me lots to take back to my practice!” | Alissa L.
Keep in mind that once these live webinars are held, we will convert them into recordings that will then be available for purchase through Lhasa OMS and Eastern Currents. Recordings from Modules III and IV are already available for sale and if you
missed Module I, that recording will be available for sale just before summer’s end! See below for more information!
ONLINE RECORDING UPDATES:
Students who have registered for the live webinars will also receive access to these recordings for a two-year period of time to review and study! For students who registered for live webinars pertaining to Modules III and IV, all recordings have been posted in your Net of Knowledge account.
If you’ve taken all sections of these live webinars, please keep in mind you still need to take the four-day, live, in-person only classes: Assessment and Treatment of Injuries (ATI), in order to earn your certification. Our next Module III ATI class has been scheduled for JANUARY 29-20, 2022 and our next Module IV ATI class is now APRIL 21-24, 2022. There are only a few spots left, so please make sure to register soon! (Payment is not required until the month before the class starts, but we must have your registration and all of your documentation in order to reserve your spot.)
For those who just completed Module I, the Anatomy, Palpation and Cadaver Lab recording has already been posted and the PACE I recording will be posted within a couple of weeks! If you took both Module I Online Live Webinar classes, please keep in mind you will need to take the live, in-person only class Huatuojiaji: Vertebral Fixations and Facilitated Segments when it is scheduled next year!
For students taking online live webinars and wanting to earn their C.SMA, please make sure to submit a copy of your CEU certificate from these classes to acusportinfo@gmail.com so it will count toward your certification. Recorded webinars from MODULES III & IV are available for sale now! For those who missed our live online classes for Module III: The Lower Extremity and Module IV: the Neck, Shoulder and Upper Extremity, the recordings are now available for purchase through Eastern Currents and Lhasa OMS. These classes allow you to earn distant CE’s and count toward your
certification!

4. FEATURED ARTICLE
Low Back Pain Part 1 – Superior Cluneal Nerve Entrapment: A Contributor to Yaoyan Syndrome
by Matt Callison, L.Ac.
In this article, Matt discusses the Yaoyan region of the low back and a common local nerve entrapment that can contribute to the pain associated with Yaoyan Syndrome.
5. SMAC PROGRAM CLASSES
To make registration easy for both online course and live in-person courses, we’ve created two registration pages—one for Live, In-Person classes (every class will still be offered in this format) and another for all Live Online and Recorded webinars. After classes are held as live webinars, they will be
converted into recordings that are available for purchase.
You’ll still have a two-year period of time to complete all of your classes to earn your certification, but this will allow you the flexibility to attend classes either in person, virtually or study on your own time. View our Class Descriptions page for a list of classes for each module!
For those looking for certification, you will still need to take all classes in every module, including our four practical, in-person only classes:
- Module I Huatuojiaji Points: Vertebral Fixations and Facilitated Segments
- Module II: Assessment and Treatment of Low Back, Hip & Groin Injuries
- Module III: Assessment and Treatment of Lower Extremity Injuries
- Module IV: Assessment and Treatment of Neck, Shoulder & Upper Extremity Injuries
You’ll also still be responsible for passing all four online module exams and the final in-person, practical exam.
Please keep in mind, you can start the program with any Module and can take individual classes or all classes within a Module!
For questions and support, please visit our newly revised FAQ page. From registration to certification questions,
this is an excellent resource to get all your questions answered. As always, if you have any additional questions, please email Patricia Botet at acusportinfo@gmail.com. We’re always here to help!

7. ACUSPORT EDUCATION'S STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
We want to make sure you know about the beneficial alliances that AcuSport Education has formed with Lhasa OMS and Unified Practice. This is just one of the ways we are fulfilling our goal to support our program graduates!
8. WANT TO STAY CONNECTED WITH US DURING THE MONTH?
Make sure to join our Sports Acupuncture Facebook Group where we post interesting treatment strategies and the sports acupuncture community shares clinically relevant discussions that can help
you improve your practice. We began moderating this new group on July 1, 2019. It is closed to the public, but open to ALL Licensed Acupuncturists and Acupuncture students (proof required) and ALL members of the group can post. The page is NOT exclusive to C.SMAs, so others training in Sports Acupuncture are welcome to post, though we think that the group will reflect Sports Medicine Acupuncture, especially if C.SMAs post frequently. Below is a portion of the statement
that appears on the 'About' page.
"This group is open to licensed and registered acupuncturists. The goal of this sports acupuncture group is to build unity in the field of Sports and Orthopedic acupuncture and to promote this field within the larger acupuncture community. While the administrators of the group are the creators of Sports Medicine Acupuncture®, sports and orthopedic are welcome to post and discuss. The group is lightly moderated. Information from
all traditions of acupuncture are welcome and encouraged, as they are collectively integrated into this forum, but please keep the conversation relevant to the above stated goals."
The current SMA Google Group (for C.SMA practitioners) and SMA Facebook page remain the same.
