Enhancing Sports Medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine
ACUSPORT EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
ISSUE 39 | JUNE 2021
Summer is here at last and we’ve super excited to start our summer school sessions later this month!
This first round of classes are all two-day online live webinars. So, you have plenty of time to enjoy the summer, while also learning how to treat the myriad of injuries that occur as we now start emerging after so much time in isolation! And, the best part is that you also gain access to these recordings for a two-year period so you can re-listen and review anytime!
Modules I-The Spine starts June 26-27, 2021, with the Anatomy, Palpation and Cadaver (APC) Lab class followed by Postural Assessment & Corrective Exercise (PACE) I in July!
Then, on August 21, we start with Module II: The Low Back, Hip and Groin APC Lab, followed by the
Assessment & Treatment of the Channel Sinews (Jingjin) (ATS) class in September and PACE II in October.
MODULE III & IV ONLINE RECORDING UPDATES:
For those who took the Module III and IV live webinars, all recordings have been posted in your Net of Knowledge account. If you’ve taken all sections of
these live webinars, please keep in mind you still need to take the four-day, live, in-person only classes, Assessment and Treatment of Injuries (ATI), in order to earn your certification. Our next Module III ATI
class has been scheduled for January 29-20, 2022. There are only a few spots left, so please make sure to register soon! Payment is not required until the month before the class starts, but we must have your registration and all of your documentation in order to reserve your spot.
MODULE III Recorded Webinar is Available for Sale!
For those who missed our live online classes for Module III: The Lower Extremity, the recordings are now available for purchase through Eastern Currents and Lhasa OMS. These classes allow you to earn distant CE’s and count toward your certification.
Individual Module III Courses
- Course 1: Anatomy and Cadaver Lab
- Course 2: Motor Point Needle Protocols for Lower Extremity Muscles
- Course 3: Assessment & Treatment of the Channel Sinews
- Course 4: Postural Assessment and Corrective Exercise
DID YOU MISS THIS?
Just a couple weeks ago, Matt and Brian were hosted by Lhasa OMS where they discussed the interconnected myofascial anatomy of the Small Intestine sinew channel in Exploring the Small Intestine Sinew Channel. They presented clinically effective points to help relieve pain and tension in this channel, discussed a few of the many injuries that can affect this channel, and shared specific needle techniques and myofascial manipulation techniques to help your patients recover.
What you will learn in this discussion:
- The interconnected myofascial anatomy of the SI sinew channel
- Functional anatomy associated with the SI jingjin and related channels
- Clinically effective acupuncture points and techniques for particular injuries
- Complimentary myofascial manipulation techniques

my “tool” bag could not help! Thanks again!” — Ali Racheotes

3. C.SMA PRACTITIONER OF THE MONTH:
Max Lewis, L.Ac., C.SMA
Max describes how her Sports Medicine Acupuncture training helped her gain a better understanding of anatomy and physiology which deepened her understanding of Chinese Medicine, helped improve clinical outcomes, and sparked her interest in continuing postgraduate studies!
4. FEATURED ARTICLE
Treating Hip Asymmetry with Sports Medicine Acupuncture
by Sean Davis, L.Ac, C.SMA
"When a patient comes in with low back pain, knee pain, leg pain, or sometimes even neck and shoulder pain, one of the first things we do is pull out our measuring device and take exact measurements of the angle and tilt of their hips. This can give us a lot of information right away about which muscles are currently working correctly and which are stuck in either a too short or too long position..."

7. ACUSPORT EDUCATION'S STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
We want to make sure you know about the beneficial alliances that AcuSport Education has formed with Lhasa OMS and Unified Practice. This is just one of the ways we are fulfilling our goal to support our program graduates!
8. WANT TO STAY CONNECTED WITH US DURING THE MONTH?
Make sure to join our Sports Acupuncture Facebook Group where we post interesting treatment strategies and the sports acupuncture community shares clinically relevant discussions that can help
you improve your practice. We began moderating this new group on July 1, 2019. It is closed to the public, but open to ALL Licensed Acupuncturists and Acupuncture students (proof required) and ALL members of the group can post. The page is NOT exclusive to C.SMAs, so others training in Sports Acupuncture are welcome to post, though we think that the group will reflect Sports Medicine Acupuncture, especially if C.SMAs post frequently. Below is a portion of the statement
that appears on the 'About' page.
"This group is open to licensed and registered acupuncturists. The goal of this sports acupuncture group is to build unity in the field of Sports and Orthopedic acupuncture and to promote this field within the larger acupuncture community. While the administrators of the group are the creators of Sports Medicine Acupuncture®, sports and orthopedic are welcome to post and discuss. The group is lightly moderated. Information from
all traditions of acupuncture are welcome and encouraged, as they are collectively integrated into this forum, but please keep the conversation relevant to the above stated goals."
The current SMA Google Group (for C.SMA practitioners) and SMA Facebook page remain the same.
