When a patient complains of lateral elbow pain, commonly the pain generating injury is at the lateral epicondyle (tennis elbow). However, the practitioner needs to be aware of other injuries that can generate lateral elbow pain.
Located within a 2-inch circle are 7 common injuries that can come into an acupuncturist’s clinic. If the assessment and diagnosis of the injury is not accurate, the treatment protocol will be less effective. Many times, key distal LI and SJ channel points known to reduce pain in the channels are important. Yet, sometimes local points are needed to affect the pain generating tissue. As traditionally-trained acupuncturists, we know the effectiveness of acupuncture is greatly affected by
appropriate point selection and needle technique, which includes local, adjacent and distal needling.
